"The very notion" means "just the concept itself" [

"the very notion of a sentence in conversation is problematic"

In this sentence, "very" is used as an adjective to mean "mere" (or "just").

very (adjective形容詞)= the same 同一個, 相同的
the very notion =(使用/以)同一個概念
the very notion of a sentence =以同一個句子概念
In contrast, the very notion of a sentence in conversation is problematic.

In writing, sentences are complete and many are long and structurally complex. In contrast, the very notion of a sentence in conversation is problematic.
