Basically, the three types of particles, electron, proton and neutron are the constituents of an atom. But be aware that protons and neutrons are not elementary particles (基本粒子). They are made of up particles called quarks (夸克).

No, the presence of neutron is not a must. Normal hydrogen atom contains a single proton and an electron without any neutron.
