It is our spirits that make us different from other animals.

This sentence is grammatically correct.
But can anyone please explain to me, how come "it" is appropriate, when "it" refers to "spirits" which is plural?

For example, you can't say "it is my books."
But how come in this case, it is appropriate to say "it is our spirits." ?
Thanks!

It is our spirit (we have only one) that makes us different from other animals.

Even if we had two: It is our feet that enable us to walk.
