It eats it's mother's milk. It's not old enough to wean yet. Whoever is selling it to you doesn't care much for it's well being, and if you're buying it at that age, you don't either. It needs at least 3 - 4 more weeks before being old enough to leave it's mother. By that time the owner/breeder (if they are worth their salt,) should have the puppy weaned enough to leave it's mommie and able to eat milk-softened puppy chow. Use the extra two weeks to bone up on what it takes to raise a puppy. You'd be surprised how much there is to learn, and how much you CAN learn during the time your puppy is growing strong enough to leave it's mother.

This mutt pup needs to stay with its dam and littermates for another 3 weeks, and then it may find a home with a person who actually knows how to raise a dog - NOT you.

Puppy food. What do you think they eat? I recommend Merrick or Holistic Selects, dry and canned. The pup will need to eat 3 times a day.

What a relief to know you are not taking this young puppy home. It should stay with Mom until he is 2 months old.

Healthwise there is no replacement for mother's milk. Mentally it will be better trained by dog mom. It would likely be less insecure and nervous and it might even be better for his potty training as dog mom teaches her puppies how to behave like good dogs.

Don't take your new puppy out until it is stable in your home and has had the vaccination shots (at 8, 12 and 16 week). Care for them as if they are little babies.

Give them only kibbles for puppies 3-4 times/day, clean water available all the time. No treats for the first few months, like you don't give babies potato chips.)

They don't have bladder control before 5 months old and have the urge to go to the bathroom after a nap, eating and playing. That's when their intestines are in motion. So you know where to place him and when. After a few times they seem to get the idea.

Before taking the puppy home, plan out an area inside or just outside the house for it's toilet. I used to put newspapers at one corner of the kitchen for my new puppies with a bowl of drinking water. Confine the puppy there as soon as it gets home until he does something on the newspaper. Save a small piece of the stained newspaper as the smell would tell the puppy it is fine to do it there. Praise him with a little pet on the back and say in the highest pitch of your voice -- good boy, good boy.

Don't be mad at him when he pees elsewhere. Small puppies can't hold it. But you need to clean the spot well and get rid of the smell with diluted vinegar. If you caught him in the act put him on the newspapers and say good boy good boy.

Use simple terms consistantly. All puppies need to learn is the difference between allowed --good dog-- and not allowed -- naughty/bad dog (stern voice)--.

One very useful tip though: disturb your puppy everytime it eats, right from the start and everyday. Do it playfully and gently like petting him on the back and shifting his bowl a little, more gradually. This will prevent your puppy to become a food and belonging guarding dog. Some dogs would jump up at somebody walking by his belonging and start growling. This will help your puppy realise that there is no need to worry even if food is taken away, hence a more generous nature later on.

Try to spend as much time as you could with the puppy. Puppies grow so fast that you don't want to miss any minute of its growing up. In the meantime you have to take every opportunity to correct him. Anothe thing, no biting -- every time he gets his teeth into your hands say no and give its chin a little upward tap with a finger. Once he's learned not to bite and not to guard food/belonging, it will become a sweet and safe dog to have around. Have a good time!

Ah that is a scary looking mix. I'd hate to wake up to it. Even though, since it's not a breed you ahve no idea what it will look like. But this one freaks me out.

It's going to eat whatever it was eating before. You will want to slowly switch the food to something great. You need to look into holistic dog foods.

If you honestly need a lot of help for this dog, two weeks is not enough time to learn everything. Especially to buy, and not adopt, this mixed breed from someone. Even though is more than likely to happen to these mutts, you don't really want to see it in a shelter. Or I hope you don't.

a Doberman Poodle Mix?
Seriously? why would you buy that?
and how much is it?
and why wouldn't you do some serious research and read
some books about dogs and especially about the dog breed(s) you
are looking into?
A Dog is a huge responsability and you should take this a little more
serious. Read a book and do research. how can a few paragraphs
here on YA solve all the questions and problems someone has when
they first get a dog? that is impossible!
And then a poodle doberman mix, where you have no chance of
knowing what the dog will be like when he is a grown up?
Seriously?

@ Ashley - To say "high quality" and "Science Diet" in the same sentence is an oxymoron. Science Diet is extremely low quality dog food that is marketed extremely well and gives kickbacks to veterinarians to recommend their garbage food. There is absolutely no difference in ingredients between Science Diet and Iams or Pedigree or any other commercial brand of dog food. They are made up mostly of fillers like corn and soy and are extremely overpriced.

HIGH QUALITY FOODS are foods like "Taste of the Wild", "Orijen", "Evo", "Canidae" or any other 5 or 6 star food on www.dogfoodanalysis.com.

high quality PUPPY food - I recommend Hills/Science Diet and Purina
look for food approved by AAFCO for puppy by feeding trials (compared to lab/chemical analysis) -- this will be on the label
canned or dry is fine

your puppy will need frequent bathroom breaks and i would recommend crate training. i'm sure other will elaborate on these needs.

take your new puppy to a vet to get checked out for congenital defects or other problems
most vets provide lots of good information and free products to new puppy owners
