A few days ago I took a tick off of my dog and it left a big lump, which isn't usual for her?

The tick was on there a few days before I noticed I think, because it was turning the brown color. I pulled it off of her.

There was a tiny black/brown dot in the center of the lump on her, but it didn't *look* like a tick head to me, and I thought that I got the head off (but you know how you question things you've seen when it's challenged later on). I don't think that the tick was on the spot that she had the lump (I think it was a little below it) but I can't say I'm positive. The lump was red with no rings or anything. It was maybe 1 cm x 1 cm in size.

Now the lump is still there. It hasn't gotten any bigger or smaller. It's scabbing over and its not as red as it was.
I just want to know if this sounds like a sign of a tick bite infection/infection from the head being in her. She's never had a lump (at least this big) from a tick before, if this is in fact how she got it, and I want to be sure I take the right steps (whether I should open it to try to get a tick head out if it might be in there, or if her body would extract it on its own later on. If I should clean it, leave it alone, etc.). Are there any signs I should look for?

Don't bother telling me to see a vet if that's all you're going to say, because obviously I'm capable of doing that myself, but I'd like to learn a little about this first, as she's been acting fine and doesn't seem bothered by it.

I've had the same thing happen with my dachshund. I don't think I've ever not gotten the head out when it's been buried, but it is nerve wracking because you feel like you never know 100% unless the tick had just attached itself.

The spot from the tick bite can be red for several days afterwards. I normally clean the spot immediately with alcohol and put Neosporin on it. I would think that the body would force the head out eventually if it's still in as the body feels it as a foreign object. I would just keep cleaning it daily and watch it. If it gets bigger, stays red, develops puss, or anything out of the ordinary, take her to the vet.

Or if you're really worried you can always call your vet and ask them for advice too.

I did that to my Cocker Spaniel last year. I saw this brown spot bigger than the head of a match and knew right away it was a well fed tick. I used the hot end of a burnt out match to kill it, or just hurt it I don't know, and it was easier to pull it out. My Cocker would lay down quietly so I could do this without hurting the dog.

I wonder if the lump has nothing to do with your pulling out the tick which could have already caused some irritation/infection before you spotted it. When the lump gets thicker and thicker it could be the skin healing up and later on it will come off. My Peke had one on his back last week. He must have been nipped by the Cocker a bit too hard.

How about watching for further development? I would put some anti-septic cream or ointment on it though.

it is probably just a skin reaction to the bite. if it starts to spread then you have problems but for right now just watch her to see if she is sick.

PHONE your vet and ask, they'll be familiar with what ticks are in your area and if this is a sign of whether or not a fragment of the bug is still embedded.

Personally I'd do that first anyway, then take a hot washcloth and lay it on the area for 15 minutes (repeatedly warm it to keep it hot) to see if there is infection if you can bring it to a head to have it opened to remove.
