"It is the spirits that make us different from other animals."

Just wondering, I know "it is" is not grammatically correct in this sentence. however, I found it awkward to use "they are" to replace it. How would people normally say it, according to the meaning of my sentence?

Actually, I found "it is" grammatically correct. "It" seems to stand for the distinguishing factor between humans and animals.

As the first responder stated, replacing "the" with "our" helps the sentence sound more natural, but you could also phrase it as:

Our spirits make us different from other animals.

Person 1: What makes us different from other animals?
Person 2: It's our spirits that make us different (from other animals).

Actually, using "it is" is perfectly correct. The problem lies with the "the". Replace it, as follows:

"It is our spirits that makes us different from other animals."

Hope I could help. :)

Just replace 'the' by 'our' ~ It is our spirits that make us different from other creatures/animals.
