When I come home from work, it makes me feel good to see my little monster excited to see me.
I know people who have trained their dogs to not bark at all. They sit silently when their owner comes home until prompted otherwise.
I'm not saying that's bad, but not my style.
Whatever boundaries you set are fine...as long as you enforce them.
My dogs know by now what I do and do not tolerate. Barking when people initially come inside, okay. Barking at the fence like a lunatic, not okay. I own the food so I make the rules! :)
I love it when my dogs go nuts when I walk in. However, happy and OUT OF CONTROL and/or obnoxious are very different things.
I don't' want my dogs wildly jumping all over me, snagging my clothes, nipping at my hands/purse and BARKING until I can't hear myself think.
I'm strict with my dogs when they are in the early to moderate phases of training. Once they are mature I try to let their personalities shine. It's rare that I have to discipline one of my mature dogs. They are not incessant barkers, but they romp around the house wagging their tails and grabbing their toys to show me when I come home! Lots of happy moves to let me know they are HAPPY HAPPY, but no pawing or other out of control behaviors.

I'm pretty strict and very consistent. I have never encouraged my dogs to go crazy when I arrive since I learned that making a big fuss is one way to encourage any latent separation anxiety, but we certainly have a little cuddle and a few words together, usually after they go out for a pee. I can't stand barking dogs and have been blessed with one dog which just doesn't bark much at all, ever, and another who only barks on certain occasions. Me coming home isn't one of them..
I do not like being jumped on, licked, or pawed at, so I ignore him until he settles down. I have trained my husband to do the same lol. Now he just stands there with a butt-wiggling tail wag waiting for us to finish whatever it is we're doing as soon as we get home, his patience nearly running out as he waits VERY expectantly to be loved on :P
My dog knows im his leader so he waits quietly till i give him a signal he can come to me, that is usually when im standing still facing him, than he will sit politely at my feet while i pat him.
But my step mothers dog on the other hand, i let her jump around me since everyone else always does the same thing
They are very discipline. Me and my boyfriend are very, very consistent with our training routine. They know not to bark around us or in public but when its play time its wild time (because we allow it).
I disturb my dogs playfully when they eat. This has turned them into dogs which careless about food or toys being taken away as they think it is part of the game. I feel comfortable to have friends with small children come to our home as I know that anyone picking up anything from the floor would trigger off growls or even attacks from my dogs.
They come, stop and sit when I say so. I train them only with the view of not causing problems to other people. I don't want soldiers with tails!
"They sit silently when their owner comes home until prompted otherwise."
Yep,that's my dogs.I am constantly affirming my pack leader status.I even make each of them do 20 "lie downs" every day.
My dogs know not to scratch the front door or bark but once I am in the house I get them all excited and jump around in circles and pet each of them! They know that when I stop we are done and to calm down. I love our play routine and I feel it is a good reward for not digging my front door!
I let my dog do most "dog" things like barking. I discipline him only when he tries to eat my cat's poop or when he runs toward the street in front of my house. I don't want him to get run over. Other than that, he's a good boy. His name is Ziggy and he's a yorkie/peekapoo mix. He looks like his daddy the yorkie.
