You're doing the absolute right thing by treating the environment as well as your dog. Good on you for starting the right way.

I'm not sure exactly what there is where you live, but where I live you can pop into a hardware store or a supermarket and buy a flea bomb. It's a can, around the size of a can of fly spray that you let off inside your house. You need to leave your house for a few hours but it usually goes a fair way to getting stuck into the problem. With bad infestations you may need to let off two or sometimes three bombs over a period of time. Another option is to contact a local pest controller. They can spray your house and yard but they can sometimes be expensive. Another option is to call them and ask for the name of the chemicals they use to control fleas, then go to shop and try to find something with the same chemicals in it.

Don't forget to treat your dogs bedding too.

You'll need to bath the dog in a flea rinse to kill any adult fleas on your dog. Again, I'm not sure what's available where you live, but a quick phone call to a vet will cost you only the price of the call and they'll be able to tell you the names of good quality flea shampoos.

I personally use for my three dogs a combined heartworm, intestinal worm and flea control once monthly tablet called sentinal. It works wonders and I've not had a flea problem since my dogs have been on it.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

If you are looking for a flea spray or fogger, Vet Kem is one of the best brands. They make a fogger & a premise spray. Both work great. It's the first choice brand of all the vets I've worked with.

When you vacuum, it is a good idea to put a piece of a flea collar in the bag or spray the premise spray into the vacuum bag before vacuuming so that fleas you vacuum up won't come back out of the bag into your house. You should put the vacuum bag into a secure trash bag & take it out to the trash (outside of your house) as soon as you are done vacuuming, whether it is full or not.

Fleabuster is a good product to use for long term flea control in your house. It is basically boric acid granules that you brush into your carpet or hardwood floors. This dehydrates the hatching fleas & kills them. It's a bit of work to do, but it creates an environment fleas can't survive in. The manufacturer says it works for a year, but it's usually at least 2 to 3 years before you need to reapply. It's safe for babies & pets. The problem is that for the first few weeks, your flea problem seems to get worse because all the fleas are trying to come out of the carpet, so it's best to use a flea fogger or premise spray at the same time. After the adult fleas are killed, the Fleabuster powder works great because the fleas can't live in the carpet.

For your dogs, you should bathe them with a nice hypo-allergenic shampoo, like Douxo Maintenance shampoo. Lather up the dogs & let the shampoo sit on them for 5-10 minutes. before rinsing thoroughly. This will drown & kill any fleas on them & is much better for their skin than a harsh flea shampoo.

Sentinel (made by Novartis) is a great product to consider using. You have to make sure your dogs test negative for heartworms first, but it is a monthly pill you give that protects against heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, & whipworms, & has a type of flea control called lufenuron. It basically stops fleas from hatching so that a new colony can't form in your house. It doesn't kill adult fleas so it's good for long term control, but until your problem is under control, you should also use an adulticide like Frontline Plus, Advantage, Comfortis, ProMeris, Capstar, etc. to kill off the adult fleas.

The reason most dogs with fleas have tapeworms is that to get tapeworms, dogs must swallow a flea that is infected with a tapeworm larva. Dogs & cats swallow fleas when they are grooming themselves. It only takes one flea, so if a dog swallows the wrong flea, it will get tapeworms.

When you treat the house, you must vacuum everyday and put a piece of a flea collar inside the vacuum bag. By vacuuming you will be picking up the flea eggs so they don't hatch into more fleas in 10 days and start the cycle all over again. Frontline Plus is fine, but make sure you follow the directions exactly. The dogs bedding must be washed in very hot water along with your bedding if the dog has been sleeping with you.
It's not true that all dogs with fleas have tapeworms, mine did not, so unless you actually see little segments around the anus that look like grains of rice, don't pump anymore poisons into his system than you have to.

Foggers work great.Very reasonably priced.

There is no cheap easy way to rid your house of a flea infestation. You have to pay whatever it costs.
As long as you have flea eggs in your house they will keep hatching and keep infesting your dog.

Probably flea bombing every room of the house is cheaper than getting a pest exterminator out but you may have to do it more than once. I'd pay the extra and have the professionals do the job.

You will also need to treat your dog for tape worm. Dogs with fleas all have tape worm.

Like K-dawg I use the once a month chew tablet Sentinel Spectrum. The dogs have never had fleas or worms.

Raid Flea Bombers

I usually use Raid Foggers.

If they have flees bad, bathe them w/the Blue Dawn Dishwashing Liquid & the flees will die almost instantly. You'll probably have to do this only once. It works! Then condition him w/a conditioner you buy from a pet store to relieve his itchy & dry skin. After I did that once to my Chihuahua, I never had to again.

I just take her a bath w/a flee shampoo w/a tub full of water & a capful of Skin-So-Soft by AVON rinsing her w/it to soothe her. The S-S-S repels flees & mosquitos for some reason. Then after that. Drain the water & rinse her well w/just plain water. When she dries, I use ADVANTIX on her monthly.
Good Luck On getting rid of your unwanted pests.

Another suggestion: Have you thought of staying w/someone or in a hotel for 1-2 weeks? This way you can rebomb your house or apt a few times & they won't get back on the dogs.
