Whats the difference between a chant and a song?

The school asked me to teach the ESL children chants.
Is there any difference between chants and songs?
For example, is it ok if I teach them the "happy birthday song", does that count as a chant?
Thanks.

a chant is a short phrase that you say over and over again with the same rythm.

a song has verses and a chorus

1.
a short, simple melody, esp. one characterized by single notes to which an indefinite number of syllables are intoned, used in singing psalms, canticles, etc., in church services.

i think anything short and easily rememered is good. some songs are chants.

Chanting to me is like what cheerleaders do.. Very repetitive, not real sentences, no real tune, maybe even just a few words.
Songs are more with having a melody and more lyrical
