Nuclear fission (核分裂) is the process at which a heavy nuclide is made to split, usually by a bombarding particle like neutron, into lighter nuclides with the production of energy.

An example of nuclear fission is the spliting of uranium-235 atoms by bombarding them with slow neutrons. Such process is used in most commercial nuclear power reactors in producing energy for electricity generation.
