Thunder is produced by the rapid heating and expansion of the air because of the large electric current that occurs in lightning. The more intense the lightning, the larger is the electric current, hence the larger the amount of heat produced in heating the surrounding air. As a result of such rapid heating of air, the air expands suddenly, causing a loud bang.
