Boy, that queston is WAY to general.

There are several ways to find out what kind of distribution it is. There are usually several hints in the tasks like certain key words/phrases or just by the given parameters.

I would always in general start by trying to find out if the distribution is continuos or discret and go on from there.

If you give us an example tasks we can tell you which distribution and why.
