1) Helium
- used as inert gas shield for arc welding
- used as a coolant medium for nuclear reactor

2) Argon
- fills incandescent light bulbs
- used in dating rocks with a process called Potassium-Argon dating

3) Krypton:
- used with argon as a low-pressure filling gas for fluorescent lights
- used in some photographic flash lamps for high-speed photography, lamps

4) Neon
- used in making neon advertising signs
- used to make high-voltage indicators, lightning arrestors, wave meter tubes, and TV tubes

5) Xenon
- used in making electron tubes, stroboscopic lamps, bactericidal lamps
- used in the atomic energy field in bubble chambers, probes, and other applications where its high molecular weight is of value

6) Radon
- radon detector for earthquake prediction
- radiation therapy (especially for cancer) in hospitals

7) Nitrogen
- Nitrogen in the air helps as a diluting agent and makes combustion and respiration less rapid.
- used in the industrial preparation of ammonia, which is converted into ammonium salts, nitric acid, urea, calcium cyanamide fertilizers etc.
- used in explosives (Ammonium Nitrate)

8) Oxygen
- for breathing. Animals require oxygen in their air (or water) to live.
- for oxidation reactions e.g. Fires require oxygen to burn.
- In the processing of iron ore in a blast furnace. Oxygen is used to convert coke (carbon) to carbon monoxide. The carbon monoxide ,in turn, reduces iron oxides to pure iron metal


9) Carbon dioxide
- its use in soft drinks and beer, to make them fizzy.
- Carbon dioxide plays an important part in vital plant and animal process, such as photosynthesis and respiration.
- used in fire extinguishers because carbon dioxide can blanket a fire .
