Question 2:Short answer:Puck is also known by the name Robin Goodfellow. Puck is the jester of Oberon, the fairy king. (A jester is a man in old days whose job it was to amuse the king or queen, for example by telling jokes or performing tricks.)In A Midsummer Night's Dream Shakespeare introduces Puck as the「shrewd and knavish sprite」and「that merry wanderer of the night.」 Long answer: ( + the following points for future studies)
Puck is a clever and mischievous elf and personifies the trickster or the wise knave. He is the type of fairy that likes to be around mortals (human beings) and cause them trouble. Puck sets many of the play’s events in motion with his magic, by means of both deliberate pranks on the human characters (transforming Bottom’s head into that of an ass) and unfortunate mistakes (smearing the love potion on Lysander’s eyelids instead of Demetrius’s).
Puck is a likable character who tends to create mischief around himself. Everything is a game to crafty little Puck. Yet once he realizes that he has caused a problem he will make sure to the best of his ability and power that it is rectified.
Puck’s capricious spirit, magical fancy, fun-loving humor, and lovely, evocative language permeate the atmosphere of the play. As Oberon’s jester, he is given to a certain coarseness, which leads him to transform Bottom’s head into that of an ass merely for the sake of enjoyment. He is good-hearted but capable of cruel tricks. Finally, whereas most of the fairies are beautiful and ethereal, Puck is often portrayed as somewhat bizarre looking.
