is, nose, rose

Just wondering, why does the IPA say the "s" in these words are pronounced as "z"?
for example: is [iz]
But from what've heard til now, it seems like everyone pronounce it as "s", not "z".
How do you pronounce it?

It is pronounced as a 'z'.

For example, you pronounce the 's' in 'nose', differently to how you would pronounce the 's' in 'house'. The 's' in 'nose' is pronounced more like 'noze'.

The difference in the pronounciation is what is called 'voiced' and 'voiceless'. The 's' in nose is pronounced as a 'z', and is therefore voiced. You can test this by placing your hand on your voicebox as you pronounce the word. You'r voicebox will vibrate. Test this is contrast to the voiceless sound in the word 'house'. You will notice the difference.

Hope this helps!
