介詞從形式上來分有四種:

1. 只有一個字的 "簡單介詞"

如: at, before, for, from, in, next, of, over, since, to, under, with

2. 由兩個字合成的 "合成介詞"

如: inside, into, out of, outside, upon, within, without;

3. 由兩個介詞連用的 "雙重介詞"

如: from among (從...當中), from behind (從...後面), till after (直到...之後)

4. 由兩個或多個單字組成的 "片語介詞"

如: at the end of (在...最後), according to (根據), because of (由於),

by means of (以...為手段), in case of (萬一), in need of (需要),

in front of (在...之前), in spite of (盡管...還是), instead of (代替), owing to(由於)



介詞在英文文法上算是最難學的其中一種詞類, 因為哪個動詞後面跟哪個介詞, 什麼名詞前面帶什麼介詞是以習慣來使用的, 必須多學及死記, 例如: look for, looking forward to, wait for, laugh at, depend on, believe in, interest in; at 後面跟時(幾點鐘), on 後跟日, in 後跟年或月

介係詞片語＝介係詞＋名詞。可當「形容詞」或「副詞」。

at

prep. (介係詞 preposition)

1. 在...地點

They were already waiting at the gate when I got there.

當我到達那裡時,他們已等候在門口了。

2. 在...時刻

Jane will meet her boy friend at Christmas.

珍將在耶誕節和她男友見面。

on

prep. (介係詞 preposition)

1. 在...上

He laid a hand on my shoulder.

他把一隻手放在我肩上。

2. 以...支持,掛在...上;以...為軸

There is a picture on the wall.

牆上有一幅畫。

of

prep. (介係詞 preposition)

1. ...的,屬於

One of the legs of the table is broken.

桌子的一條腿壞了。

Mr. Brown is a friend of mine.

布朗先生是我的朋友。

2. 用...做成的;由...製成

The house is of stone.

這房子是石建的。

by

prep. (介係詞 preposition)

1. 被,由

The homework was assigned by the teacher.

這些家庭作業是老師佈置的。

2. 靠,用,通過

They crossed the river by ferry.

他們乘渡船過了河。

3. 經由;沿

Ellen flew to Chicago by way of Minneapolis.

艾倫經由明尼阿波利斯飛往芝加哥。

We had to get there by evening.

我們必須在夜晚前抵達那裡。

prep. (介係詞 preposition)

1. 從...起,始於

She is singing from morning to night.

她從早唱到晚。

2. 從;由

He rose from office boy to managing director in fifteen years.

他十五年裡從工友升到總經理。

3. 離(開)

Our school is two miles from the station.

我們學校離車站兩英里。
