In the above discussion of fishers, there is no mention of what may be globally the most basic classification of humans, namely that by gender: males and females. In the past, such a distinction may have been seen as irrelevant, since attention was focused on the fishing activity, and women, it was assumed, played no role in this. As Nadel-Klein & Davis (1988: p. 1) put it: `Images of fishing tend to be male ... It is safe to say, in fact, that Western tradition has stereotyped fishing as an exclusively male occupation Unfortunately, this perspective robs us of the ability to think about women in fishing communities, to ask what women do and to contemplate the possibility that "fishing" as an economic enterprise might require, and even value, women's labor.'
