x^2 + 2x - 2 = 0
x^2 + 2x = 2

P = x^3 + x^2 + ax + 1
= x(x^2 + x + a) + 1
= x(x^2 + 2x - 2 - x + a + 2) + 1
= x( - x + a + 2) + 1
= - x^2 + (a+2)x + 1
= - (x^2 - (a+2)x) + 1
when - (a+2) = 2 , i.e. a = - 4
P = - (x^2 + 2x) + 1 = - 2 + 1 = - 1
