I have a legal question about dogs and self defense.?

A good friend of mine and I sometimes go cycling together and, in addition to her water bottle, she also had this little squirt bottle. Both were attached to the frame of her bike.

I asked, "What's that," and pointed to the squirt bottle.

She said, "I was attacked a couple days ago," and showed me the would where the dog had bit her just above the ankle.
"That's pure bleach in that little squirt bottle," she remarked with a tone of newly discovered confidence.
"Spray it at their nose and eyes and it'll stop any dog"!

Okay ... That got me to thinking. She said she's already tried it during another attempted attack and it worked like a charm. However, the owner of the dog (who could only run after my friend on her bicycle and didn't have his dog on a leash) wasn't very happy, to say the least.

I'm concerned because if my friend keeps doing this, and she loves to ride her bike, especially on natural terrain, she might get caught one of these days. I think pets are considered property, aren't they? Which case would be stronger in court, property damage or self defense?

Self defense would be the stronger case, but it would be a he said/she said situation and the judge would finally have to make a decision. If the judge is a dog lover, well ... not good.

I liked the dog whistle idea. There might be something electric, like those dog collars to make dogs stop barking, but more in the shape of those "sick sticks" used in the film Minority Report. That could easily be attached to a bicycle.

Now I'm curious because I like to ride my bike, too.

It's still self defense. If her well being is in jeopardy she has the right to defend herself.

If she didnt start the fight that is.

It's the dog's owner that is responsible for keeping their dog under control.

bring yourself a pocket knife or trekking pole, stab or bash it in the nose as haed as you can, if it still wont give up, break its spine or skull

Techinically she can kill a dog for self defense and there is nothing wrong with it if it's self defense however she needs to handle this in a more mature manner. She needs to talk to the owner of the dog and kindly ask him to keep his dog chained up, if he doesn't and the dog attackes her she can press charges and get the dog owner in trouble. However if she just goes and spray bleach on the dog and it caused medical problems with the dog she can be held liable for that. She needs to talk directly with the dog owner, and if she does all that then she can carry something for protection. But she has to show she tried to reasonably handle the situation first.

Plus in a lot of states if you are bitten by any animal and it breaks the skin, you are required by law to report it. She should report her bite to the police and take pictures.

Dogs are property however the dog owner is required to train the dog and if they can't stay on their own property they are requires to tie or fence them in. There is NO excuse for letting a dog attack someone.
