Never mind about the statistics or theory. Try these below:
1. Make sure you clean everything you can see inside your tower. Use a new small paint brush to get rid of all dust on all the fan blades and heat sink fins. Do the same to motherboard, slots, RAM's, air vents etc. Check fans to see if they are all working properly.
2. Remove the CPU heat sink and clean the contact surfaces then apply a new coat of thermal compound and reseat the heat sink. Clean the fins on the heat sink as well.
3. Use plastic twist ties to bundle up all the ribbon cables inside your tower to allow better air flow.
4. Fans. Install at least one fan so it blows air into the tower while another one draws air out. This generates much better air flow.
5. Any heat sink on your video card? If you do have one, treat it the same way as in step 2.
Sometimes power supply with lower wattage, especially if gaming, can generate a lot of heat. Serious gaming (high speed CPU's & up market video cards) require a lot of power to run. If you are one of those, a 500 Watt power supply will be necessary. If all 5 steps don't improve, take a look at your power supply. Parts work hard to overheat if they don't get enough power. They might die prematurely too. Be careful!
Last but no least, clean your tower as in step 1 above every 6 months. You'll be amazed the difference it makes!

If existing thermal compound appears hard and brittle, it's time to replace it.
