Les Miserables - Brief Summary
During the French revolution, the economy and living conditions were poor and the political system unstable.The main character of the story - Jean Valjean, was released from jail after serving 19 years for stealing bread to feed his starving nephew, and had become increasingly angry and bitter at the society that rejected him. By chance, he went into a church and was well treated by the seventy some year old BIshop M.Myriel. However, he commited a crime again by stealing the bishop's silverware. The kind M.Myriel not only did not report him to the police, but also covered up for him. This incident touched Jean Valjean's heart and he vowed to change to be a good person. He moved to another town and assumed the name of Madeleine. After a lot of hardwork and persistance, he had advanced from an ordinary man, to become the mayor of the town. During that time he met Fantine, a factory worker, and fell in love with her. Unfortunately, fate claimed her young life. Before she died, she asked and Jean Valjean promised, to bear the responsibility of raising her illegitimate daughter, Cosette. At the same time, police inspector Javert was acting like a demon, wanting to expose the fact that Madeleine was Jean Valjean.
Jean Valjean had to constantly elude Javert's tracking, and after endless effort and difficulty, managed to raise Cosette to adulthood. Cosette and a young revolutionist called Marious became lovers, and later got married. However, when Marious found out Jean Valjean's real past, he dispised and rejected him, and at this point the play had come to its climax, highlighting Jean Valjean's miserable life. He had committed crimes, but he was punished by going to jail, and had tried his best to compensate, to help others, including the police inspector Javert, despite years of hostility. Still, society judged Jean Valjean cruelly, according to his past mistakes.
