When and why did the Home/Away Jerseys alternate?

I remember that the mostly white Jerseys used to be worn by the Home team but now the away team does so, i apologize if this is a stupid question but i have been wondering why this is so for awhile can anyone shed some light?

It was in 2004 as you can see by the evidence I've provided below...

I'm not sure exactly why it was changed, I think maybe the dark jerseys sell better than the white ones. I'm glad it was though. I'm all for dark at home. I mean why would the BLUEshirts wear white at the Garden and why would the REDwings wear white at the Joe?

It was in the 2003/2004 season.

The league for the entire so-called Original Six era and the first few seasons of the Expansion era had teams wear their dark sweaters at home and white on the road, but flipped this in 1970.

The league simply went back to its traditions for the 2003-04 season by having teams wear dark sweaters at home and white on the road, but for fans that grew up in the 1980's and 1990's, the "white at home/dark on the road" likely seemed the norm even though the league has mostly been a "dark at home/white on the road" league.

2003=04, but I wish they hadnt changed it. Reason being this...you see your local team play, home or away, on TV anyway. You dont necessarily get a chance to see the team that comes into your town to play your hometown team but maybe 5 times a year at the most. Make the road teams wear the colored jerseys, just to make it more interesting as a fan.

IE-I live in Buffalo, I see probably 75 out of the 82 games (dont have versus) so I see a lot of games where they wear the home blues, a lot of games where they wear the road whites. If I go to a game, Id rather see, say, Montreal's red jerseys, or Boston's black jerseys and the Sabres in white, rather than always the same thing, Sabres in blue, away team in white...it seems more interesting to me that way.

2004 - used to be in the pre-expansion days that the home team wore colours while the visitors wore white. The NHL was trying some nostalgia marketing by saying they were going back to their roots. Frankly, I'm okay with it ...

The proper answer for the switches is simply so the fans who attend most of the games year in and out can get to see their heroes in both colours
