I am speaking hypothetically. Also, not just time machines but things of that nature.

Things of "that nature" ? since time machines are impossible, you want to know how to build impossible things?

If you want to design things are more possible, study engineering.

Science is knowledge to understand the mechanism of nature.
Engineering is the application of human knowledge to real life.

For a person to construct a useful product, both are necessary. For hypothetical thing, imagination is enough.

You would do best by studying science (fiction), and fairy (tales).
Then, sleep on the problems. Beware night (mares). They are contra- indicative.

lots of math
time = physics
machine = engineering

that "someone" must study all of the above, of course, unless he rubs an empty lamp and meets a genie
