how can i stop an iphone from transmitting my location?

My friends parents said that they can use her iPhone to find out where she is at all times. We were looking at it and saw no indication of a tracking app. How can we find out if they actually can track it, and how, is they are, do we disable it?

Turn the GPS off. But consider this there is for your own safety.Yes there are bad people in the world, you don't want to be a victim.
Tracking you would be hard to do for your parents, if at all.
Don't become paranoid. Parents should also understand making such
a statement could lead to endangering you.

Google is developing a system to locate a cell phone. The underlying principal is using the information from the service provider. The cell phone has to registered with the base station which provides the best signal. The tracking system use the base station location and other information to estimate the cell phone's location.
The system works whenever the cell phone is powered up. You cannot disable the system.
