How do I stop unsolicited phone calls?

This is getting ridiculous now.
3 or 4 times a day we are getting phone-calls with pre-recorded messages either trying to sell us something or convince us that there is a problem with our bank accounts.

It used to be a nuisance at first... now it's just downright pis-sing us all off.
Is it even legal? Can they be stopped?

-Cheers

the telephone preference service is supposed to block unwanted calls made from the UK, but cannot stop calls made from abroad.

i had my BT phone disconnected 3 years ago, and changed my mobile phone supplier due to the exact same problem, if it starts again, i'll deal with it the same way.

I live in Ontario Canada and in this country the government has created a system whereas you can call and have your phone number put on a national do not call list [with some exceptions] If you put your number on the list and you are called by someone that is not on the exception list they can be fined if you get the information on what company called.I would suggest that you write letters to your news papers and members of the house of lords to enact this type of legislation it may not eliminate all unsolicited calls but it would surely cut down the number of them.

If the calling number is private, you can instruct phone company to block all private calls.

If the calling number shows up on CID, you can call back to ask the company to stop future advertising calls.

there are 1 800 numbers you can call to add your phone and cell phone numbers to the 'no call list'
check search engines for the numbers, I don't recall what they are
they eventually are helpful and if at any time you get one that a person actually is on the other end you can sort of threaten them that this number is on the no call list, because you can report them and they will be fined
