I have heard horrible things about all brands of computer companies (Dell, HP, Gateway and Emachine to name a few).A 1TB HDD is absurd unless you are a heavy movie downloader. I'd say anywhere from 500gb to 750gb should be good. If all you want is a computer to browse the internet and install a couple large programs go with 250gb.
RAM in a computer nowadays should be between 2gb - 4gb. I play many memory intensive games and 4gb with Windows 7 installed works very well.
For a laptop 2gb should be fine.
