Prime Lens - Canon 85mm 1.8lens?

Hi all - i am an amateur wedding photographer, also do studio shoots with families etc. I currently use the 450D.
I would like to buy my first prime lens but have never used one before. I am keen on the 85mm 1.8. I have also heard the 50mm is a very good lens. If i use the 50mm surely that will be almost the same as just having my standard 55mm lens that comes with the camera??

Can anyone give me some tips and pointers please!

THANKS SO MUCH :)

With the 18-55mm kit lens, at 50-55mm, your widest aperture is f/5.6. The 50mm f/1.4 is about three stops faster. When shooting wide open you are not getting the best out of a lens. There is a world of difference in shooting with the 50/1.8 at f/5.6 and with the 18-55 at 50mm and at f/5.6. I often shoot portraits at f/5.6 and f/8 because that allows me to get the entire face sharp But that is an optimum aperture for my lens too. And at 50mm I can get quite close which helps to blur the background. So no the 50mm is not remotely the same as the kit lens.

Keep in mind the distance you shoot portraits at. Do you like the distance at 50-55mm with your kit lens? If so, you might consider getting the 50mm. But if you are really interested in the extra reach the 85mm might be a better choice.

The 85mm is one of canons sharpest lenses. On a cropped sensor body it may be a little telephoto though. I would opt for the 50mm, for the same money as the 85mm you can get the 50mm 1.4, which has a faster quiter USM focus motor than the 50f1.8.

This is still a great portrait focal length, but a little less compressed than an 85mm (x1.6 because of the crop)

The kit lens isn't close to as undesirable as human beings make it out to be. Is it tack sharp and stronger high quality glass? Hell no, despite if it particularly is a strategies from a paperweight. And the 80 5 isn't over 100mm. that is 85mm, no count what physique you place it on. till you're coming from 35 mm action picture this particularly should not be a concern. that is not something yet wasted recommendations cells till you're taking photographs distinctive formats. i could individually shop yet another $one hundred and get a 50 a million.8, and an 80 5 a million.8. then you particularly've 2 respectable lenses, which opens some suggestions. The longer 85mm could be used in case you desire to compress the history and cover distracting factors as an occasion. it would extremely have a greater slimming consequence on matters. That gruesome peephole distortion you spot at huge angles isn't via focal length. that is via distance from the lens to the difficulty. you are able to run into distortion at even 50mm once you're doing a good headshot and get in particularly close. i'm easily not asserting the a million.4 isn't stronger, yet i could individually extremely have 2 suggestions (and respectable lenses) rather of one. the adaptation in the two isn't so super that they could be surely picked out. once you're anal adequate to pixel peep, perhaps.....in any different case the a million.8 is merely positive for many application.

That is an excellent lens.

Certainly the 85mm lens would be good for portraits, but so would the 50mm, possibly of more use since you do not always have much room indoors on a wedding. Indeed the picture on the 50mm would be almost the same as the 55mm, but you have the greater aperture on the prime lens, helpful for blurry backgrounds and in poor light.
