Is the strike zone bigger this year?

It seems that pitching is waaaaay ahead of hitting this year, this coupled with the comments by both umpires and people in the commish's office that they need to speed up the game, I'm beginning to suspect that there are more strikes being called.

Anyone else notice this?

I don't know. That might account for the 2 (should be 3) perfect games this year. But in our town Josh Beckett is on the DL, Dice K is Dice BB, Tim Wakefield is looking old and Pap gives us nervous saves. Fortunately Buchholz and Lester are pitching like Cy Young candidates.
Right now Rajon Rondo is the most popular athlete in town. Hope it stays that way for a while longer.

I believe the strike zone never changes, but the umpires do.

It's hard to tell.

yes, but not only because of the umps calling the strikes, but more batters are expanding their zone as well.

(cardinals)
BQ: haha its close but id say hitters :)

Pitching is dominant this year.

It might not be because of the strike zone per say, because steriods and other enhancing drugs have been cracked down on. This year, the Runs per Game stat for all of MLB is at a low point, never seeing this kind of low scoring since 199? something.

But about the zone, yes, it appears to have gotten bigger. Calls that used to be balls are now strikes, and some hitters are getting pretty frustrated with some of the calls.

As for the BQ, I'm a Boston fan, and our pitching isn't doing so hot this year. Right now the hitters are what gives us wins, not the pitchers... Boston hitters>>>Boston pitchers.

Yes, the strike zone is bigger; I'm pretty sure they actually announced that it was going to be during the offseason. Its no coincidence, however, that pitching has become more dominant in each year since baseball cracked down on steroids.

I see two things: One, yes, the strike zone is really big. Two: The umpiring leaves much to be desired.

BQ: It really depends on the team. Some teams lean heavily on the pitching while some teams rely on their "stud" in the lineup.

Its hard to tell. I would definately agree that they have been trying to speed up the game. They should to keep people entertained. But The strikezone should be called the same way, no bigger no smaller. I cant stand when u get an umpire who doesnt call a good strikezone and makes it bigger. The plate is there for a reason
