Why do doctors have to show off their MD status everywhere?

It makes sense for them to put MD on a business card, news article, resume and etc. But, why would people (note: not person) put MD next to their name on a wedding card? What's the deal? Showing off?

Definitely showing off. I work at a flower shop, and most of our doctor customers use "Dr. so-and-so" on their home accounts as well as their professional accounts. It's kind of pathetic.
