Being disabled, what other options could I try seeking employment?

I am physically disabled but am able to work, however I am struggling to seek employment. I know that there are less jobs available but also employers aren't willing to interview me even when I meet the essential criteria. When I do get an interview it is normally with my local council who must interview disabled people who meet the essential criteria, but I then don't get the job. I am not saying that this is always the case that my disability has been the barrier but on at least two occasions I know that it has been the reason why I haven't got the job. I get so angry when I hear the government saying that they want people off benefits and into work, and here I am desperate to be off benefits and into work. It is causing me to start having problems with depression which could lead onto not being able to work which is crazy! Does anyone know or have any other suggestions about what I could perhaps try do rather than just apply for advertised jobs. The job centre hasn't been of any help. Thanks!!

I didn't understand Tony's answer in terms of " if you are in a wheelchair I would never suggest "some" positions" etc. But I thought I would add that I am a wheelchair user although I am able to walk short distances.

I am appreciating all the answers including from the USA but thought I would add that I am from the UK, in case anyone knows anywhere in the UK that might help me. I am liking the idea of trying my MP.

Thanks to everyone who answered, they all all good answers and can't choose one so will put this to the vote. Hopefully I get something soon and good luck to the people in the same boat :)

Anyhow, your post was fairly articulate. But, you left out the most important thing - most likely on purpose? However, we/I/they need to know?

If you are in a wheelchair I would never suggest "some" positions.
If you are afraid of people I would never suggest "those" positions.
If you are blind/partially blind I would never suggest "that" position.
If you are deaf I would never suggest "this" position.

Get in a volunteer interest which you're saying i prefer to artwork for funds. Lot of places you are able to volunteer at like the library, wellbeing center, welfare businesses provides you with a straight away shot in case you instruct them how stable your artwork is. In different words, thoroughly steer sparkling of the (council?) never heard of that by technique of how. or you are able to take it up w/ the vocational rehabilitation yet it somewhat is purely a theory. additionally tell the guy interviewing you-the council or gov't for some reason thinks that disabled individuals are greater disabled, (intellectually, and so on.) than they're. certainly S.S.D.I. does. factor out your i.q., something above a hundred and twenty is g/t.

Call centres have to take a certain percentage of disabled people. Most Disabilities can be catered for. I worked for Orange and we had several people in wheelchairs and one Gent was almost totally deaf, but they gave him a special headset.
Good Luck.

I totally understand your frustration, my son is deaf & is finding it hard to find a part-time job whilst he studies. I know jobs are scarce at the moment but it seems disability is another barrier to work. Have you thought about working for charities? In my experience they see past the disability & are more likely to treat you fairly. Even if you can only find voluntary work for the moment it will look good on your cv & the work may help lift your depression. Good luck, I hope you find something soon. :)

Don't fall into a depression. You will find something one of these days.I'm unemployed and been looking for sometime now.As well as other people I know. Boy and there are alot.Everytime I talk to
someone, I hear about another person getting laid off.And I'm not disabled. There are just no jobs out there. How about if we just move to China,Pakistan,or any other country then we would have a job. That is where all our jobs have gone from the USA .It's cheaper for the U.S.A. to send our jobs out of the USA and to other countries for cheaper labor.Well now we the people are suffering. There were commercials on t.v. that would say "Buy USA brands labels to keep our jobs here in the USA"
guilty as I am I didn't.I didn't listen.I should have paid the extra few dollars for clothes made in the USA but No I had to watch the extra dollars. So by doing that we supported other countries instead of our own backyards and the people who live in the USA. And now were all suffering because there
are no jobs.Who is to blame we the US people.Shame on us for not supporting each other. Now here we are withouts jobs and not helping to keep our economy strong. Sorry had to vent because
this is such a sad position were all in.But you should volunteer your services at thrift stores
hospitals and just maybe something will come out of it.But lets keep faith and pray that jobs do start up again. But in honestly I don't think your disability has anything to with you not finding a job. There are just no jobs.Be patient and have hope.

Write to your MP ask him to look into your dilemma, after all as you say they want disabled people into work, and yet you are being discriminated against.

Ya, it is weird. My girl is on disability. She has been on it so long I do not think she will ever desire to work. I know they would never help her with school. This would be the best and quickest way to get her off disability forever, pay for all or the majority of school. Yet, if she attends school full time she loses many of her benefits. So, I understand that part. But, it is what it is. Somewhere at some time someone passed a law that made it this or that way. All we can do is vote for change or over throw the government.

Like most who read this we will not come back to look at your additional information where you address this issue. However, possibly for the future people that review it, now that you understand "our" dilemma - they might help.
