A. If they run fine in other PC's, try to run a flash (pen) drive in your USB port. If its fails, check you BIOS for USB port settings. If it's good, plug in the external hard drive. Click Start > Run. Type cmd and enter to go to DOS window. At prompt, type chkdsk X: /F /R and enter to execute. This might take a long while to finish, depending on the capacity of your hard drives. Due to unforeseen circumstances, some data might be lost during this operation due to sector problems. Best to back up important files before you proceed.

X: is the external drive. Don't forget to space in front of /F and /R. F is to fix errors and R is to recover data and locate bad sectors.

B. Right click My computer > Properties > Hardware > Device manager. If there is any yellow exclamation mark on a device, click into it. Click to the end of the path with the yellow mark. Right click the device, insert the CD that contains the driver for the device, click update driver. Window wizard will search and reload the driver for you. If successful, the yellow mark will disappear and the device will run properly.

C. If all of the above fail, run your anti virus in Safe mode to clean viurses and malwares.
