Animal meds at regular pharmacy?

A friend of mine is married to a pharmacy tech. I was told that whatever prescription you can get your vet to write for your dog can be filled at any pharmacy! I don't know if it's true but it's supposed to be so much cheaper. Has anyone heard of this or done this before?

my dog has been on a prescription her entire life which i have bought from the vet at a cost of 20-25 dollars each time ... i was away from home and needed a refill so my vet called it into a local pharmacy and the cost was 11 dollars ... so yes, you can get vet prescribed meds for cheaper at a regular pharmacy ... and i also found out that where i live not all pharmacies charge the same dispensing fee ... some it can be as high as 10 dollars on top of what your prescription is but places like safeway and walmart are cheaper

Certain meds can be obtained from a regular pharmacy. I have a diabetice cat and a cat who has anxiety issues as well as heart problems and I get all of their meds at Costco.

Many prescriptions for dog medication can be filled at regular pharmacies. Here in Florida, Publix Supermarket's pharmacy dept. will fill prescriptions for antibioitics for your dog for free.
Our vet regularly tells us to take prescriptions there since it's free.
We get insulin for one of our dogs at the pharmacy also,
- plus the syringes. That we have to pay for, but it's the same insulin for dogs as for humans.

if its a drug that the pharmacy would carry - yes. There are some drugs that can be used in humans or animals.. something that is veternary use only- probably not.
Its sometimes cheaper.. Pharmacies get in larger supplies than a vet would.. they can obtain drugs cheaper since they buy in larger quantities, and therefore can sell cheaper.
The issues is getting your vet to write the prescription.. many vets wont.

It is true that veterinary prescriptions can be filled at a pharmacy but not true in most cases that it is cheaper. Most vets don't have a significant mark up on their medications as that's not how they make their money, the same is not true for regular pharmacies.
Vets typically only write prescriptions if the owner request it (typically to use at online pharmacies for long term prescriptions as online pharmacies buy at such large quantities that are cheaper than the vet) or for drugs that the vet does not stock because they are not commonly prescribed or have run out of and the animal needs it then.
Also keep in mind that no vetenary drugs can be filled at a regular human pharmacy as some drugs are approved for veterinary use only so a regular pharmacy would not stock them.

I did it when Cory had Cushing's - some drugs are chaper, some are not. Not all vet drugs are available at a human pharmacy but some common drugs are avaiable and cheaper at a human pharmacy.

You can if there is a human version. Some pet meds are not used for humans. Also depending on your state your vet does not have to write you a prescription. Only half require vets to write scripts if the owner requests one.

haha im a pharmacy tech.. yes its true, we have filled things for dogs, i forget what, but prozac for cats is common, it usually is done at a compounding pharmacy like jolley's pharmacy if the normal ones dont have the right strength

Alot of people do that because the vets gouge so much for the pet meds.. Some clinics charge anywhere from 100-400% for pet meds that can be obtained through a pharmacy. Some are specialized strticly for animals but some likeheart meds are cheaper at the pharmacy.

I get my dog's drugs at the human pharmacy, the vet calls in the refills, but I did have a prescription the first time. The drugs are on the 4$ list, so not expensive. The pharmacy folks think it is funny when I get Oscar Canine's prescription, but they say they have other animal prescriptions. My vet suggests human drugs that I can use for the dogs, and tells me the dosages and brand names.
