The bible clearly states that if speaking in tongues there should always be an interpreter or how would you know that it wasn't a devil coming through, but most speakers seem to not have noticed that bit!

Not always.

1 Cor 14:33 For God is not [the author] of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

1 Cor 14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

WHEN UNKNOWN TONGUES ARE INTERPRETED, IT EDIFIES THE CHURCH

------> But what about the edification of an individual? <-------

PRAYER LANGUAGE: (the personal form of an unknown tongue)

-----------> used in prayer & singing

I Corinthians 14:14-15 For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

ONLY when a "gift of tongues" is operated in meetings.

The MAIN use of tongues is personal private prayer, allowing God to ministyer his love and peace (that pass understanding) to your sould - no interpreter needed here.

Many people have NEVER been to a meeting where tongues is used properly!

If you have never spoken in tongues you need to receive God's Spirit, then you will (Acts 2:4, 33, 39; John 3:8)

No, because then they'd realize that they're not actually speaking a consistent language.

I thought they WERE the interpretor. If you can't understand them, it is likely as phony as a 3 dollar bill.

If you find me a uni and a country that can help teach people 'tongues' (lol) then I'll learn it and interpret...til then, I'm going to stick with tellin 'em they're psycho.

This is what the Apostle Paul had to say about it.

1 Corinthians 14:4-6 (New King James Version)
4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for[a] he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

Tongues Must Be Interpreted

6 But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching?

Paul said there should be an interpreter if a person spoke in tongues in public.

If people speaks in tongues, he should speak in a right way. He is giving out blessing like prayer. But in prayer, we know what you say. But in tongues speaking, angles in heaven will know what they say. So we need not to stop people speak in tonuges. But it is important to let them know, they should speaks at a good spiritual's state. That what they speaks can give blessing to others.

If a interpreter exist, he is not a normal christian. For someone can translate the meaning of tonuges should have some experience and learning before God. So dont deceive yourslef, if you really dont know what other say. Dont give your own idea or words to translate what you dont know.

A church may not need an interpreter but need a real christian before God.
