It's common. The other thing they do is have the bad guy be the white guy with the British accent.

To be honest, I think it's just a question of who their target audience is. If they think most people who go watch it will be white males, they'll have a white male star so the audience can identify with him. Then the bad guy has to be not easily confused with him. Easiest way to do that is to have them look and/or sound significantly different.

I've never heard anyone say they think all British people are bad because of the movie conventions. I can't imagine they'd be particularly more likely to think all Asians or blacks are bad because of it.

Germans and Russians are nearly always the bad guys as well, even though WWII and the Cold War are both over a long time ago.

Arabs and people of Middle Eastern appearance are the new bogeyman in fiction it seems; I'm struggling to think of a mainstream movie I've seen recently where Arabs saved the day.

One TV show I watch regularly, I always know if a Hispanic character turns up, they will end up being the murderer.

Where I live, black people are always the good guy (we have black people, but not African-Americans). And I think most of the time on TV and in movies, black people are usually good or neutral.

I think the situation might be more complex than you suggest.

It's normal, if you watch American movies, they would put the minority groups as the bad guys, and the white Americans as the good ones. But isn't it the same in Chinese movies, where Jackie Chan is always the good guy, and the western looking people are always the bad guys.
