Although fewer men than women were
overweight in 1977/78, by 1994/96 there was an equal proportion of overweight
Americans. One likely cause of this American weight gain is the increase in
average daily calorie intake, which grew around 10 percent over the near 20

percentage of consumed carbohydrates was virtually identical to the percentage
of total fat consumed. That said, the make up of America ’s daily calorie intake
