上面 lingthk 只講了過去進行式的其中一種用法，其實它可單獨使用。例如有命案發生，警察問你事發時在那裡，你可以說 I was watching TV at home 我在家中看電視。這句用過去進行式而不用簡單過去式是因為要強調事發當時「正在」看電視。這句可按用簡單過去式 I watched TV at home，但就失去了強調「當時」的語氣。

The past continuous tense is used when there are two action happening at the same time.
It was raining, when Tom came to my house last night
He was talking to his mother on the phone, when I saw him yesterday.
or
He talked to his mother on the phone.
I saw him yesterday.
It was raining, when Tom came to my house last night
He was talking to his mother on the phone, when I saw him yesterday.
or
He talked to his mother on the phone.
I saw him yesterday.
