A Farmer has supplied millions of tomatoes to a particular supermarket over a very long time. The farmer does not weigh every single tomato produced but has been toldby the supermarket that the tomatoes he supplies to them have an average weight of 74 grams. It is well known that the weight of tomatoes is normally distributed about their mean. The farmer also knows that the supermarket has a policy of rejecting tomatoes that are too small. Specifically, they reject (and will not pay for) tomatoes that weigh less than 70 grams. The supermarket manager has told the farmer that 9.01% of his tomatoes have been rejected. We know that the mean weight of tomatoes grown by the farmer is 74 grams; what is the standard deviation of tomatoes grown by the farmer in grams?

The weight of the tomatoes ~ N(74,σ^2)

We have P( Z < (70-74)/σ ) =9.01%
=> (70-74)/σ = -1.3401
=> σ = 2.9849

Tthe standard deviation of tomatoes grown by the farmer is 2.9849 grams.
