I believe you are assessing it correctly. Racism is common among the Han Chinese, although not often openly expressed.

[Side note: in answer to the final Q you posted when selecting BA in Taiwan - KMT is the acronym for "KuoMingTang" (pronounced Guo Ming Dang). They are the original Republic of China government, nearly 100 years old now, and pre-dating the People's Republic of China by about 35 years. About 15 years ago, they revised their political stance and opened Taiwan to a democratic system. They are also referred to as the "Pan-Blue" coalition; their opposition is the DPP-based (acronym for Democratic Progressive Party; aka Ming Ching Dang) "Pan-Green" coalition.]
