If you want red wigglers for composting, you cannot dig them out of the ground (they don't live there.) And you shouldn't go to a tackle shop, where you will get six worms in a cup. You need to buy them by the pound. A family of two needs one to two pounds of worms. Too few and the food will rot and they will likely die.
You may find them at a local farmers market. The internet is a good resource. Just goolge "composting worms," or "red wigglers." Or use this list of Eisenia fetida worm growers "Directory of Vermiculture Resources:by State in the U.S. and by Country:Worms, Supplies & Information"

I thouught that this educational site on worm composting had particularly good information, and the links at the bottom are especially worth your time.
