what the oxidation number of cobalt in Co(NH3)4Cl2 ?
A.-2 B.0 C.+2 D.+6

the oxidation number of NH3 is +1, and the oxidation number of Cl is -1,so
x+(+4)+(-2)=0
x= -2

but the answer is C, I can't understand, can anyone explain to me?

(It's from 2006 CE paper2 No.3)

Do you know any website for solve the problems about CE Chem?

The answer of the question is C.

NH3 is a neutral molecule, which has the same of oxidation number 0.
(The sum of oxidation number of NH4^+ is +1. Nut now, it is NH3, NOT NH4^+.)

Cl^- is an anion, and thus its oxidation number of -1.

Co(NH3)4Cl2 is a neutral compound.
Sum of oxidation numbers = (Oxidation number of Co) + 4(0) + 2(-1) = 0
Hence, oxidation number of Co = +2

(I cannot find any website for HKCEE questions, because HKCEE questions are too simple to many people.)
