up and down are direction adverbs used to show where someone/something is.
up = a place somewhere in the north of the speaker; down= a place somewhere in the south of the speaker.
In fact, when speaking the speaker is usually pointing to the place where someone/ something is.
adverb, which can be omitted, is used to give further information about the verb
副詞用作附加資料,使更清楚易明,可省略但若沒有適當副詞意義不清。
up / down = 在(北面/南面)那邊不遠處
e.g I am going down to the post office.
我正要到那遑的郵局去。
I saw him down at the shops.
我看到他在那邊的商店裹。
