physics problem about spring

2010-04-06 12:18 am
A sping stretches vertically 0.3m when a 0.5 kg mass is gently loaded on it.
The spring is then set up horizontally with the 0.25 kg mass resting on
a frictionless table. The mass is pulled so that the spring is stretched 0.2m
from the equilibrium point, and released from rest. What is the magnitude of
the maximum velocity?

Spring constant = 0.5g/0.3 = 16.67 N/m
where g is the acceleration due to gravity, taken to be 10 m/s2

Since the motion is simple harmonic, the angular frequency w is,
w = square-root[16.67/0.25] s^-1 = 8.165 s^-1

Hence, max velocity = angular frequency x amplitude of oscillation
i.e. max velocity = 8.165 x 0.2 m/s = 1.63 m/s
