1) A metal block is first immersed in boiling water for some time.The block then trasferred to a cup of cold water . After a while , temperature of the water is measured:
The result::
Mass of the metal block : 0.8kg
mass of the water in the cup : 0.3 kg
initial temp of the water in the cup : 23 C
final temp of the water in the cup : 38 C
find the specific heat capacity of the metal (in j kg^-1 C^-1)
given that the specfic heat capacity of water is 4200 J kg^-1 C^-1

the answer is 381!

1. Let c be the specific heat capacity of the metal
Heat absorbed by water = 0.3 x 4200 x (38-23) J = 18900 J
Heat given out by metal block = 0.8c x (100 - 38) J
Using the heat balance equation,
0.8c x (100 - 38) = 18900
solve for c gives c = 381 J/kg-C
