figure out the parenthesis

24 + 3x - 18 = 8x - 74

condense the left side

6 + 3x = 8x - 74

move the 74 over and get the x's on one side

80 = 5x

divide by 5x

80 / 5 = 5x/5x

16 = x

double check your work by substituting all of the x's with 16

24 + 3(16 - 6) = 8 (16) - 74

24 + 3 (10) = 8 (16) - 74

24+30 = 128 - 74

54 = 54

x is definitely 16 because checking our work equals out

1. distribute the 3 within the parenthesis to get 24+3x-18=8x-74
2. add 24 to 3x-18 to get 3x+6=8x-74
3.get x by it self on one side of the equation 3x+6=8x-74 by subtracting 3x from both sides and adding 74 to both sides to get 5x=80, now divide both sides by 5 to get x=16
