When there is mirage in a desert, which layer of air has a smaller refractive index?

A. The upper hotter layer
B. The upper cooler layer
C. The lower hotter layer
D. The lower cooler layer

The answer is C
As mirage happens in desert, the ground is heated up and so the air of the lower part is hotter and upper is cooler
In general,the refractive index has a relationship with density of the material.The higher the density,the higher the refractive index

The answer is option C.

Mirage normally occurs over deserts. The layer of air in contact with the desert gets hot and becomes less dense. Air above it is cooler and denser. Light from distant object is thus refracted total internally when passing from the layer of cool air to the layer of hot air.
