I luv both the manga and the anime.Ichigo gets his bankai by training against Zangetsu in the Rescue arc starts around episode 42, He finishes training around episode 52 or 53. Goes to rescue Rukia in episode 54. Yoruichi used a method that helped Ichigo acheive his bankai in 3 days.
As for Ichi's dad, He's a Soul Reaper who left Soul Society for unknown reasons, although the reason is soon to be announced in most-likely next weeks issue of Weekly Shounen Jump :D
