In most power stations , fuels are burnt to boil water to produce steam . The steam drives the blades of the turbine . The turbine rotates and drives the generator to geneerate electricity . During this process , chemical energy stored in the fuels is changed into kinetic energy of the turbine . This kinetic energy is transferred to the generator and then changed into electrical energy.
