An "ionic compound" is a compound which is made up of positive ions and negative ions. The positive ions and negative ions are held together by the forces called "ionic bonds" which is electrostatic in nature.

For example, sodium chloride is an ionic compound because it is made up of sodium ions and chloride ions. The sodium ions and chloride ions are held together by electrostatic forces which is known as "ionic bonds".
