Given log 18=a and log 12=b , express log 6 in terms of a and b.

a + b = log(18) + log(12)
= log(18 x 12)
= log (216)
= log (6^3)
= 3 log(6)
=> log (6) = (a + b)/3

log_16 4(x+1) - log_4 8 = log_16 (x-2)
log[4(x+1)]/log16 - log8/log4 = log(x-2)/log16
Since log8/log4=2log8/2log4=log64/log16
log[4(x+1)]/log16-log64/log16=log(x-2)/log16
4(x+1)/64=x-2
x+1=16x-32
x=2.2
