Hassan and Amir are two very good friends when they were young. They grew up in the large mansion that belonged to Amir’s father in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Hassan was Amir’s servant, and he was very loyal to Amir. He would do anything for Amir. And they used to go to the cinema together, play under the poplar tree, read together, and run kites together. People had never seen the two of them separate.
But things all changed after the kite tournament.
Hassan ran into Assef’s gang when he was running the kite that Amir has won. Assef is a gangster who dislikes Hazaras, which Hassan is. Assef beat him up and insulted him without mercy—and Amir saw all of this happen. But he just watched, instead of standing up for Hassan. He was too timid.
After that incident, the bond between Hassan and Amir broke. Amir avoided Hassan and hid in his room all the time. And Hassan soon moved out of the house with his father. However, when Amir grew up to an adult, he regretted treating Hassan like that. Then he went back to Kabul and, after experiencing several near-death experiences, saved the son of Hassan and brought him back to the United States to live with him.
The plot of the story is very capturing. The words that the author used in the book are very condensed and strong. The book is also very rich in its local culture. After reading the book, I see how powerful friendship is. For Hassan, Amir even risked his life to save the only son of Hassan. Nothing can come between two true friends.
“The Kite Runner” is a representative work of the power of friendship. It is a must read for everyone.
